Road Safety Challenges

In this section we are interested in your views on the draft Road Safety Strategy. If you do not want to answer a question, or do not know what to answer, then move on to the next question. It is recommended that you read the document before answering the following questions.

The collection and analysis of baseline evidence identified six main challenges for road safety in West Northamptonshire, as follows:

  1. Progress has slowed: Casualty numbers have levelled off and returned to pre-pandemic levels.
  2. Different roads face different risks: 60% of collisions happen in Northampton, but our rural roads see a disproportionate share of fatal and severe collisions.
  3. Vulnerable users are at higher risk: People walking, wheeling, cycling, horse riders, those riding e-scooters and motorbikes are unprotected and face the most severe outcomes. Children (16 and under) account for over a quarter of pedestrian casualties.
  4. Speed and human error: Failing to look properly and driving at inappropriate speeds continue to feature in most collisions.
  5. Communities want safer streets: High volumes of traffic and speeding reduce confidence to travel actively.
  6. Proactive approach: Traditional collision data only shows where crashes have already happened, missing near-misses and unreported hazards.
